California CDL HazMat Practice Test — Mock Exam

A full-length mock in the California format: 30 questions, closed book, 80% (24 of 30) to pass — the same format as the real California HazMat knowledge test, which is drawn from Section 9 of the California Commercial Driver Handbook.

Just like the real test, you won't see any feedback until you finish. At the end you'll get a Readiness Score and a review of every question you missed, with explanations and sources. Missed questions are saved to your wrong-answer notebook on this device.

First-time HazMat applicants: before the knowledge test you must complete ELDT hazmat theory training (from a provider on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry) and pass a TSA security threat assessment. These are original practice questions based on the official CDL handbook — not actual exam questions.

Studying for the California HazMat test

The test covers Section 9 of the handbook end to end: the intent of the hazmat regulations, the nine hazard classes, placard tables and thresholds, shipping-paper rules, marking and labeling, loading and the §177.848 segregation table, cargo-tank operations, railroad crossings, parking and attendance rules, the Emergency Response Guidebook, incident reporting to the National Response Center, radioactive materials, security plans, and training requirements. Our 400-question bank is organized by exactly these topics, so after the mock you can drill only the areas that cost you points.
