What is the HazMat endorsement?
The HazMat (H) endorsement is an add-on to your CDL that qualifies you to haul hazardous materials — the placarded loads covered in Section 9 of the CDL handbook. Getting it takes three steps:
- Training (first-time applicants): complete hazmat theory training under the FMCSA Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) rules, from a provider on the Training Provider Registry, before you test.
- TSA security threat assessment: a fingerprint-based background check.
- State knowledge test: a closed-book multiple-choice test drawn from Section 9 of your state CDL handbook. In California, for example, it's 30 questions and you need 80% (24 of 30) to pass.
This site prepares you for step 3 — the knowledge test.

Are these the actual test questions?
No — and be wary of any site that claims otherwise. These are original practice questions written for this site, based on the official CDL handbook (Section 9) and cross-checked against the current text of 49 CFR. Each one cites its source so you can look the rule up yourself.
What does the HazMat knowledge test cover?
